Cusco – Choquequirao Trek & Machu Picchu 9 Days / 8 Nights

ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO IN – CITY TOUR

At Cusco´s airport our representative will be waiting for you. Upon arrival, airport reception to be transferred to the hotel, time free to rest and acclimatize to the altitude.
In the afternoon, the guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you on a half day tour of Cusco. You will start visiting the main square surrounded by magnificent colonial buildings, the Cathedral, the Koricancha which was the most important temple of the Inca culture; it was dedicated to worship the sun. Finally we will visit the archaeological sites of Sacsayhuaman and its impressive rocky constructions, followed by Kenko, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay. Return to the hotel.

DAY 2: SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS PISAC – OLLANTAYTAMBO:

Today, you will set off for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Along the way you will stop to visit Awanacancha a llama project where you will see South American camelids such as llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, also you have the chance to appreciate the traditional Inca weaving and dying techniques which have been kept by the local people for centuries.
Your journey continues to the small village of Pisac, and there you will walk through its lively typical market and have some free time to interact with the townsfolk and artisans and to shop for handicrafts and souvenirs. Continuing the tour you will visit Pisac´s archaeological site located at the top of the mountain which gives us a clear idea of the hard work and amazing ingenuity required to create the Inca’s agricultural terraces, its constructions are just compared with Machu Picchu buildings.
You will enjoy a buffet lunch at the town of Urubamba, and then visit Ollantaytambo which is one of the most beautiful, and significant sites in the entire Cusco region. It is a very interesting, and typical pueblo with extensive, well preserved Inca ruins; crowned by the sacred archaeological site with its impressive temple of the sun.
Transfer to the hotel.
Overnight in Cusco

DAY 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO TREK: CUSCO – CACHORA – CAPULIYOQ – PLAYA ROSALINA

After breakfast, the guide will meet you at the hotel to drive for almost 4 hour to the town of Cachora and Capuliyoq (2915m.a.s.l./ 9563ft) the starting point of the trek. Here we will meet our wranglers and arrange our equipment on mules and horses. From this place you will have the first beautiful views of the Apurimac canyon stretching below; also you will admire the snow-capped peaks of Padreyoc and Wayna Cachora.
You will start to hike (downhill) until reach the bottom of the canyon known as Playa Rosalina (Rosalina beach), the climate becomes warmer and the flora and fauna begin to change. After 4 hours hiking you will arrive at Playa Rosalina (1550m.a.s.l./5085ft) beside the raging Apurimac River, here you will set up camp and spend the night.

DAY 4: ROSALINA BEACH – MARANPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO

After an early breakfast, you will start the hiking (uphill), it is considered the hardest hiking day. After 5 hours hiking you will arrive to Maranpata where you will have a lunch. Along the way you will observe many orchids and wild flowers as well as many birds. After resting, time to continue hiking until reach Choquequirao (3103m.a.s.l./10178ft).
Time to rest and appreciate the beauty of this magic place.
Optional: climb to the top of Choquequirao to enjoy the sunset and maybe the opportunity to see a Condor flying nearby.

DAY 5: CHOQUEQUIRAO

Full day to explore Choquequirao. You will start visiting the lower sector (agricultural terraces, water fountains and constructions referred to the agricultural).
After visiting these places, you will explore the main constructions such as, the priest residential house, the usno (a platform for main rituals), the main temples, the terraces of the llamas located at the cliff of the canyon. The sectors and places discovered in Choquequiraon represent just the 30% of the total area occupied in the Inca time.
Time to return to the campsite.

DAY 6: CHOQUEQUIRAO – ROSALINA BEACH – CHIQUISKA:

After breakfast, you will start to return following the same pathway that you had walked the previous days to get Choquequirao.
The downhill will take you for almost 5 hours where you will enjoy the lunch, time to rest and take a shower in the Apurimac river. From this point you will up until get Chiquiska (1950m.a.s.l./6397ft) the last campsite. from this camp spot you will have amazing views of the surrounding sceneries.

  • Hiking Distance: 17 km / 10.5 miles.

DAY 7: CHIQUISKA – CAPULIYOQ – CACHORA – CUSCO

After breakfast, you will start the last hiking day; 3 hour climbing to get Capuliyoq. From then on it is a fairly flat trail back to the village of Cachora where we will enjoy the lunch.
The transportation will be waiting for you to return to Cusco.

DAY 8: CUSCO – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred from the hotel to Poroy train station (30 minutes driving), where you will board the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes (it is a scenic first class train, which will take you into 4 hours to Machu Picchu).
Today, you will explore Machu Picchu citadel – the new seven wonder of the world; the shuttle bus service will take you for 20 minutes from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu where you will have a 2- 3 hours fully guided tour of the mysterious ruins, visiting the most important sector of the city such as the temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana, the temple of the three windows, the mausoleum, the temple of the condor, etc.
If you are in a good physical shape you can hike to the Inca Bridge, Huayna Picchu, Inti Punku sun gate, or just wander through the ruins taking pictures.
You then return to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cusco, arrival to Poroy and transfer to the hotel.
Overnight in Cusco

OPTIONAL: hike to the summit of Huayna Picchu, (Huayna Picchu now requires an extra, limited-availability permit; allowed just 400 per day. It is a 1.5-hour hike)

DAY 9: CUSCO – LIMA – HOME

Transfer to Cusco`s airport. If your time frame allows you to visit other destinations, contact us.
